Fair Annie's Lane
A downloadable game
This game uses my Goldilocks SRD.
There is a long, winding lane leading down from the outskirts of the village, all the way down into the deep, dangerous woods to the stream at the bottom of a gulley, where a narrow bridge crosses the gorge, where a footpath follows the stream down to the neighbouring village at the far end of the gulley.
This lane is called Fair Annie's Lane.
It is named after Annie Farr, a local young woman who met her grisly end while walking (or cycling, or riding a pony) down the lane, in the middle of the night. But when she lived, and died, is not clear - some say it was centuries ago, some say it was at the beginning of the 20th Century, and many other dates in between are suggested.
The only thing they all agree on is that, on certain nights (whether they be dark and stormy, or brightly moonlit, or a particular time or dates in the year) she, or her ghost, walks abroad again, and seeks to claim new victims to ensnare and join her in haunting the lane that bears her name forever more.
One dark night, late in the year, a group of intrepid youngsters dare one another to go down Fair Annie's Lane, all the way to the bottom.
What will they find? Will they discover the truth about Annie Farr, or will the same fate befall them? Will they lose their nerve and flee, or make it all the way? What things, mundane or otherworldly, will terrify them?
* * *
This game is based on a local legend from the town where I grew up. The name of the lane, and geography, have been changed, but the basic idea of the haunted road and the varied versions of the tale, are largely the same.
At present, it is in a very sketched-out form, in order to submit on time to the Folklore Jam. I hope to create a full pdf and charatcer sheet in due course.
